Tigerwood flooring is a beautiful example of the trend towards exotic wood flooring. This magnificent species comes from Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Guatemela, and Mexico.

This uniquely marked wood gets its name from its coloring and markings, which are much like the coloring and markings on a tiger. It is a very hard wood that makes a durable, long-lasting flooring choice.

Appearance

Tigerwood flooring is a type of exotic wood flooring which displays a immense range of color and striping. The striping can differ from thin lines to large, broad strokes. Set against a background of color ranging from light orange-tan to a deep, ruddy brown, the striping can play a prominent part in the design or be subtle and less contrasting. Over time, the colors tend to darken slightly, enhancing the beauty of the grain.

The surface of Tigerwood has a slightly oily appearance making it appear to be polished.

Strength

With a Janka Hardness rating of 1850, Tigerwood is a strong, sturdy wood that will beautify the home for many years. The wood is dimensionally stable and doesn’t warp or twist easily nor does it splinter – it will ream as smooth and pleasant to walk on in fifty years as it was when it was installed.

Tigerwood Flooring from http://www.miragefloors.com

Extremely durable, with a high level of resistance to beetle attacks. It can be finished to a medium luster and will stand up well to wear. Tigerwood is dimensionally stable and resist twisting and warping. It will remain smooth, splinter-free and friendly to bare feet for years.

Working with Tigerwood

Because of Tigerwood’s strength, working with it can be difficult. Sawing is difficult at best. Cutting should be done with carbide-tipped cutting tools. Nails are also difficult to hammer in and pre-boring is necessary for easier installation. An alternative method for installation that has success is to use waterproof glue.

Sanding should be done very carefully to prevent scratching the wood. It will sand easily and a good shine can be achieved by polishing, due to the woods natural tendency to appear somewhat oily.

Tigerwood Floors

This is an excellent choice for flooring, particularly for homeowners who want a unique flooring color and pattern. It is beautiful in formal settings or bedrooms.

When deciding on flooring, homeowners should consider the décor of the room that the flooring is going into as well as the durability of the wood. While Tiger wood will look good in any room, the coloring and patterns may not be what is desired for some people. Ask for samples of the wood before making a final decision.

Caring for wood floors is basically the same regardless of whether or not it is an exotic wood or a local wood. Following preventative steps to prevent damage is as important as keeping the floor clean.

* Place floor mats or rugs in high traffic areas.

* Trim pet’s nails.

* Put felt protectors on the bottom of all furniture to prevent scratching.

* Clean spills immediately to prevent water damage.

* Use only cleaning solutions that have been recommended by the manufacturer or a solution of water with 10% Windex.

* Keep dirt vacuumed to prevent it from causing scratches.

Following these simple steps will keep Tiger wood floors looking beautiful for many years with minimal effort. Exotic flooring is the new trend and Tigerwood is a popular choice that makes a bold statement.
